Polishing chrome parts

Chrome trim, emblems, or exhaust tips dull over time and develop a yellowish or corroded surface that standard car care products cannot address. Metal polishes contain fine abrasives designed specifically for metal—they remove oxidation and restore a mirror-like shine to the surface without the risk of scratching associated with unsuitable paint polishes.

How to polish chrome and metal parts of a car

Steel and chrome have a different hardness and structure from paint, so polishing compounds intended for bodywork aren’t suitable for them—they either won’t work or may actually scratch the material.

Why chrome and metal lose their shine

Over time, oxidation, road salt, and UV radiation damage the metal’s protective layer, resulting in a dull, yellowish, or stained surface, especially on exhaust tips and older trim.

How to use metal polish

Apply a small amount to a microfiber cloth and rub it into the surface in a circular motion until the oxidation disappears. Then buff the residue to a high shine with a clean side of the cloth.

How often to polish metal

Depending on exposure and weather conditions, once every few months is usually enough. Exhaust tips exposed to heat and soot can be polished more often.
