A leather interior looks great, but only until you stop taking care of it. Then it starts to grey, dry out, and over time, it can even crack.
The good news is that proper care isn't complicated. You just need to know how to clean leather correctly and what to treat it with afterward.
In this article, I'll show you a simple process + specific products that make sense.
Leather is a natural material that needs regular maintenance. Without it:
it loses color
dries out
hardens
can crack
π Regular cleaning and impregnation prolong its lifespan and keep the interior looking new.
The most important rule:
Use cleaners specifically designed for leather. Universal chemicals can damage it β that is, unless we're talking about eco-leather, which is in most modern cars β then you don't have to worry about that.
Koch Chemie Pol Star (now Koch Colourlock Pol Star)
Nuke Guys Polsterreiniger
Bad Boys Leather Cleaner
Auto Finesse Hide Leather Cleanser
Note: Koch Chemie is now transitioning to the Koch Colourlock designation, so you may encounter both names.
Before you start cleaning, vacuum the interior or wipe the leather with a dry microfiber cloth.
π This will prevent scratching during cleaning.
You have several options:
spray onto a brush and clean
use a microfiber applicator
or apply to a cloth
π The best result comes from a combination of cleaner + soft leather brush.
Work gently, without unnecessary pressure.
Focus mainly on:
steering wheel
seat bolsters
armrests
π That's where most dirt tends to accumulate.
Finally, take a clean microfiber cloth and wipe off any remaining cleaner.
The surface should be:
clean
matte
without a greasy film
If the leather is heavily soiled (e.g., an older car), you can use a stronger cleaner.
π But always with caution β aggressive cleaning can dry out the leather.
Cleaning is not the end of it.
Impregnation (conditioner):
hydrates the leather
protects against UV radiation
slows down wear and tear
reduces the risk of cracking
π Without it, the leather won't last long.
Koch Chemie Leather Star (now Koch Colourlock Leather Shield)
Bad Boys Leather Conditioner Matt
Auto Finesse Hide Leather Conditioner
π Again: Koch Chemie = now Koch Colourlock (you might encounter both names)
Never apply conditioner to a dirty or wet surface.
Use an applicator or microfiber cloth and work in sections:
seat cushions
backrests
sides
Let the product sit for a few minutes (sometimes more than an hour) according to the instructions of each impregnation.
Finally, lightly wipe off any remaining excess with a dry cloth.
π The result = a natural matte finish, no greasiness.
too much water when cleaning
aggressive chemicals
skipping impregnation
too much product β greasy surface
applying too much pressure when cleaning
cleaning β every 1β3 months
impregnation β every 3β4 months
It depends on car usage.
It is not recommended. Leather needs special care.
Lack of impregnation or a strong cleaner was used.
Yes. Without it, leather dries out and ages faster.
It is dry, dull, losing color, or feels harder to the touch.
Yes, but use a soft brush designed for leather.
